Message	antenna position matters, but as long as it's got a clear view then it should be fine. You should make sure the extra wire isnt just stuffed somewhere, because any tight turns/bends in the cable will affect signal. All extra wire should be zip tied/taped in a large circle. I had a lot of problems with mine at first because I had the antenna on the inside, which was fine until I had my windows tinted (not sure why this made such a large difference, but it did). I moved it to the trunk lid, and even though its not completely clear, it still works perfectly. It sounds like you've got issues that should be able to be solved.
